About Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

IIT Kanpur (Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur) is a public technical institution in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Government of India designated it as an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act. The institute includes around 6478 students, including 3938 undergraduate students, 2540 postgraduate students, and over 500 research associates.

The institute began in 1959 in a space in the canteen of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in Kanpur’s Agricultural Gardens. The institute relocated to its current location on the Grand Trunk Road near Kalyanpur in 1963. Achyut Kavinde built the campus in a modernist style. IIT Kanpur was India’s first institute to provide computer science education. The idea for computer education came from the Electrical Engineering department, which was then led by Prof. H.K. Kesavan, who was both the chairman of Electrical Engineering and the head of the Computer Centre.

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur Admission Process –

B. Tech. and B.S. Degree Programmes:

Admission to these programmes is made once a year in July through the Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE-Main) and Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE-Advanced), which are held on an All India basis in April and May by the CBSE and IITs, respectively. A pass in the final examination of the 10+2 system or its equivalent is required for entry into JEE.

M. Sc. (two-year) and M. Sc. – Ph. D. (dual degree) programmes:

Admission is granted once a year via an All India level test known as the ‘Joint Admission Test for M. Sc. (JAM).’ The underlying philosophy of JAM is to provide a single unified national level test for admission to various post-B. Sc. programmes offered at respective IITs, to synergise the admission procedures for M. Sc. programmes in all IITs, and to ensure a qualitative difference in the students admitted on a larger scale.
